Where Should I Locate My Extinguisher?
Locate extinguishers in the kitchen, basement (at top of stairwell) or laundry room, workshop and upstairs. Place them in readily accessible locations, preferably near a doorway, where you can reach them without having to enter the fire area, and where you can fight the fire while remaining near an escape route. Place the extinguisher in plain view - not in a cupboard or behind a door and not too close to a potential source of fire (for example, near the stove). Contact us for further advice on the best locations.
Should I Fight a Fire?
Only fight a fire if:

  • The fire is small.
  • Everyone has left or is leaving the building.
  • The Fire Department has been called at 9-1-1. Never fight a fire if any of the following is true:
  • The fire is large or spreading.
  • The spread of the fire may block your escape.
  • You are not familiar with the correct use of the extinguisher.
  • You are unsure of the extinguisher's capabilities or are unsure of the type of fire.

In any of the above circumstances:

  • Leave the building immediately.
  • Close door(s) behind you.
  • Call the Fire Department from a neighbor's or a portable telephone.

If you do fight a fire, remember the word PASS: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep
Pull out the locking pin, breaking the seal. (Note: Some extinguishers require releasing a lock latch, pressing a foil seal or other first step.)
Aim nozzle horn or hose just in front of the base of the fire, beginning about 10 ft. back.
Squeeze the trigger handle all the way, releasing the extinguishing agent.
Sweep the material discharged by the extinguisher from side to side, moving front to back, across the base of the fire until it appears to be out. Keep your eyes on fire area. If the fire starts up again, repeat the process. Never turn your back on a fire - even if you think it's out.
The majority of extinguishers will operate according to the PASS method. Some extinguishers do not. Read the label carefully for directions on all your extinguishers.
Remember:
Know when and how to operate your extinguisher; read label carefully for directions.
Install at least one smoke detector on each level of your home. Regularly test and maintain them.
Prepare and practice a home escape plan with your family.
Check your home for fire hazards and eliminate them as you find them.
